First, the council passed a memo with suggestions and questions that it had for the Borough Planning Commission, as explained by council member Rachel Lord. Cellist Brooks Whitehouse and bassist Paul Sharpe performed a range of pieces from familiar classics to an original work by Sharpe inspired by a kayaking trip in Kachemak Bay; they were joined for two songs by their former student, Homer's own Emily Riedel. Only one citizen came out in support of the Citizens United Case, a 2010 U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowing unlimited corporate donations to political campaigns under the guise of free speech. Artist Ron Senungetuk dies at 87 By Kathleen Gustafson • Jan 22, 2020 Rika Mouw Artist Ronald Senungetuk of Homer died on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 after a long illness. He was born in 1933 in Kinigin, Wales, Alaska in a traditional sod house. He attended Mt. Edgecumbe School in Sitka. Ron Senungetuk was Inupiat, a sculptor, silversmith and wood carver of massive cultural influence as an artist, educator and mentor. On a Fulbright scholarship in Oslo, Norway beginning in 1960 he both met his wife Turid and was offered and accepted a position at University of Alaska Fairbanks in the budding metalsmithing program. It's also Alaska Civil Rights Day. To mark the day and to spark a local conversation about civil rights in Alaska, Kachemak Bay Campus of Kenai Peninsula College invited Salamatof tribal leader Jonathon Ross to present as a part of their monthly, Public Square speakers series. Ross spoke about the Dena’ina people of Tikahtnu, Cook Inlet. He laid out their traditional territory, and talked about why it matters what geographic locations and villages are called.
